New York Mets Wise To Pass On Jose Reyes
Back in 2003 I had the chance to see Jose Reyes at least 15 times, while he was with the AA Binghamton Mets. There was little doubt even then, that one day Reyes would be an electrifying major league player. Reyes' career with the New York Mets had many moments of brilliance. However, there were just as many moments where Reyes was unavailable to injury or pouting. Of course, Reyes had a career year in 2011 (his walk year), that resulted in Reyes winning a batting title (though he took himself out the lineup to assure the batting crown over Milwaukee's Ryan Braun.) Reyes was hurt again in 2011, and missed significant time. In truth the Mets should have dealt Reyes before he was hurt. The Mets are clearly in a rebuilding mode, whether they admit it or not. Passing on Reyes when he entered free agency was a sound baseball decision by Mets GM Sandy Alderson. Reyes will likely be hurt again in 2012, and most likely will never fulfill his new contract with the Marlins. The Mets can now get on with rebuilding (something they say you can't do in New York!) Get used to it New York, the Mets are rebuilding!
