Waterbury's Municipal Stadium To Get Facelift!

Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, Connecticut is set to get a facelift this year. The renovation will take place in spring 2012. Targeted areas included the front gate, press box, restrooms, and grandstand seats. This stadium has a long a proud history, hosting the Waterbury Timers of the old Colonial League. Then in 1966 the Class AA Eastern League moved in. Teams included the Waterbury Giants (1966-1967) who featured a young Bobby Bonds. The Waterbury Indians in (1968-1969), the the 1970 Eastern League Champion Waterbury Pirates (1970-71), who featured future star Dave Parker. From (1973-1976) the Waterbury Dodgers called Municipal Stadium home. They were followed by a second version of the Waterbury Giants (1977-1978), the Waterbury A's followed in 1979. In 1980 the Cincinnati Reds AA team came to town and the Waterbury Reds were born. The Reds played at Municipal Stadium from (1980-1983), and featured future stars such as Eric Davis, Danny Tartabull, Paul O'Neill, Gary Redus and others. The Waterbury Angels moved in for the 1984 season, and featured a young Wally Joyner on the club. The Angels were followed by a second stint with the Cleveland Indians (1985-1986) a club which featured Cory Snyder, Jay Bell and John Farrell. 1986 was the final year of affiliated baseball at Municipal Stadium. The stadium stood empty until 1994, when the collegiate summer league (NECBL) club the Waterbury Barons moved in for a three year stay (1994-1996.) Municipal Stadium's final team the Waterbury Spirit (of the independent Northern League) moved in for a four year run (1997-2000.) After that the stadium went dark to pro baseball. It's unlikely Waterbury will ever get affiliated baseball again, but a summer collegiate league is a possibility. Especially with a team in Torrington, only 20 miles away, as a possible rival. Let's hope the stadium renovation opens the doors for something like that! I know I will be there at Municipal Stadium, will you?
